River Danube

The second biggest European river rises in the Black forest in Bavaria. By 2857 km long run, through 10 European states flows into the Black sea in the territory of Rumania. The river basin extends the area of 817 000 km square what is the eleventh of the Europe´s surface. Through our territory the river flows or just touches it, on 172 km long stage and it has regime of alpine river with the highest capacity of water in summer months. The main tributaries of Danube in Slovak Republic are the rivers Váh, Hron and Ipeľ. In Danube many species of fish live. Their representation in the river is in excess of representation in others European rivers. Besides fishermen, the river attracts also tourists on cruises and recreational bathing.

River Hron

The Hron river arises under the Kráľová Hoľa in the Law Tatras at an altitude of 980 m. After the Váh river it is the second longest river in the Slovak Republic. Its total length is 298 km and it flows into Danube by Kamenica nad Hronom at a height of 106 metres above sea level. Hron is the most sought after and the most favourite river for water sportsmen in Slovakia. At high river level it is navigable from the village Heľpa along 272 km length. Along Hron there are many very attractive places for camping and there is a number of cycling trails. The river is along the full length of its stream sought after fishing ground.

River Ipeľ

Ipeľ is the third longest river of the Slovak Republic and sinistral tributary of the river Danube. It rises in Veporské vrchy (hills) near Lom nad Rimavicou. From the village Veľká nad Ipľom to its mounth by the village Chľaba it forms 140 km long natural border with Hungary ( with the exception of short leg round the village Vyškovce nad Ipľom). The total length is 232,5 km. Flow rate is unstable, average flow rate in the mouth is 21 cubic metres per second. The catchment surface is 5151 km square. In the 70´s the river was in the eye of anthropogenic crackdowns but its scenic coves, meanders and marshlands are still a sanctuary of many precious species of fauna and flora. In iniciative of environmentalists from both countries there was established the Ipeľ´s union.
