About region

Dolné Pohronie and Poiplie are situated in the south part of the Slovak Republic. In the south it is bordered with the Danube river and in the west with the Ipeľ river. The rivers form natural border with Hungary. In the past the Hron river parted the territory of Hont from Tekov District. Nearby villages of Štúrovo belonged to the Ostrihom District. Most of the territory of lower reaches of Ipeľ and Hron comes under Podunajská nížina (lowland), characterized by agriculture, viniculture and fruit-growing. In the southeast of region is situated the picturesque sierra Burda with nature protected zones Kováčovské kopce - sever and juh (Kováčovské hills - the north and south). Due to the rivers, seen above, there are many protected nature preserves with precious species of fauna and flora. The preserves are also sought places by hikers, fishermen and huntsmen. Some holiday resorts also provide, besides accommodation and boarding, interesting services like horseback riding and trips on the river Danube. In the region you find some lidos. The beauties of Poiplie and Pohronie you can enjoy bike riding along one of the interesting cycling trails. In many villages there is a possibility to see precious and unique historical and cultural sights, meet traditional crafts and customs and mainly to know hospitality of local inhabitants.
